What is Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment that involves the application of a chemical solution to the skin in order to remove the outer layers of dead skin cells, revealing smoother and more youthful-looking skin. The procedure is commonly used to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, acne scars, and other skin blemishes.

The chemical solution is applied to the skin using a brush or sponge. The strength and type of chemical used will depend on the desired results and the patient's skin type.

The chemical solution is neutralized using a special solution to stop the reaction and prevent any further damage to the skin.

TYPES OF CHEMICAL PEELS

Superficial peels:

These peels only remove the outermost layer of skin (the epidermis) and are typically made from mild acids such as alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) or beta-hydroxy acid (BHA). Superficial peels are used to treat minor skin concerns such as dryness, uneven skin tone, and mild acne.

Medium peels:

These peels penetrate deeper into the skin, removing the epidermis and the uppermost layer of the dermis. They are typically made from trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or glycolic acid and are used to treat moderate skin issues such as sun damage, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Deep peels:

These peels penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin, including the mid-dermis. They are typically made from phenol and are used to treat severe skin concerns such as deep wrinkles, scars, and hyperpigmentation. Deep peels are only performed by trained dermatologists and carry a higher risk of complications than superficial or medium peels.
