What is Fillers?

Dermatology fillers are a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that involves the injection of a substance, such as hyaluronic acid or collagen, into the skin to restore volume and smooth out wrinkles, lines, and folds. The fillers are commonly used on the face, neck, and hands to enhance the appearance of skin.

It is a popular and effective non-surgical cosmetic procedure for improving the appearance of aging skin. However, it is essential to consult with a qualified dermatologist and discuss any potential risks and benefits before undergoing the procedure.

PROCEDURE

The dermatology filler procedure involves several steps, including consultation, preparation, injection, and aftercare. During the consultation, the patient discusses their goals and concerns with the dermatologist, who assesses their skin and recommends the appropriate filler for the desired outcome.

Before the injection, the patient's skin is cleaned, and a local anaesthetic may be applied to reduce discomfort. The filler is then injected into the targeted area using a thin needle. The procedure typically takes 15-30 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated.

After the injection, the patient may experience some swelling, redness, and bruising in the treated area. However, these symptoms usually subside within a few days. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activity and exposure to direct sunlight for at least 24 hours after the procedure.

SIDE EFFECTS

Common side effects that can occur after a dermatology filler injection include:

  • Swelling

  • Redness

  • Bruising

  • Itching

  • Tenderness

  • Pain

These symptoms are usually mild and go away within a few days.

TYPES OF FILLERS

Fillers are made from a variety of materials and come in different types, each with its own specific use and benefits. Some common types of fillers used in dermatology include:

Hyaluronic acid fillers:

These fillers are made from a natural substance found in the body and are commonly used to add volume to the lips, cheeks, and under-eye area. They can also be used to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.

Calcium hydroxylapatite fillers:

These fillers are made from a mineral-like compound found in bones and teeth. They are typically used to treat deeper lines and wrinkles and can also be used to add volume to the cheeks and hands.

Poly-L-lactic acid fillers:

These fillers are made from a biodegradable substance that stimulates collagen production in the skin. They are commonly used to treat deeper facial wrinkles and folds.

Polymethylmethacrylate fillers:

These fillers are made from tiny beads suspended in a gel and are typically used to treat deep lines and wrinkles. They are considered a semi-permanent filler because they do not break down over time.

It's important to note that not all fillers are suitable for every individual and that a consultation is necessary to determine the best type of filler for each person's unique needs and desired outcomes.
