Nail Surgery Purposes?

Nail surgery is a medical procedure performed on the nails to address various conditions or injuries, including ingrown toenails, fungal nail infections, and nail deformities. It may involve partial or complete removal of the nail, removal of a portion of the nail bed, or reshaping of the nail.

TYPES OF NAIL DISORDERS TREATED BY SURGERY:

Ingrown toenails:

Ingrown toenails may require surgical intervention if they are recurrent, severe, or accompanied by an infection. During the procedure, the affected part of the nail is removed, and the surrounding tissue is treated to prevent regrowth. In some cases, the entire nail may need to be removed.

Fungal nail infections:

Fungal nail infections can also be treated with surgery in severe cases, particularly if other treatments have been ineffective. The most common surgical approach for this condition is nail avulsion, which involves removing the infected nail entirely. The nail bed is then treated with an antifungal medication.

Nail trauma:

Trauma to the nail can cause it to become discolored, thickened, or deformed. Treatment options depend on the severity of the injury and can range from conservative measures such as rest and ice to surgical interventions like nail removal.

Nail Psoriasis:

Nail psoriasis is a type of psoriasis that affects the nails, causing changes in their appearance and texture. Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects the skin, nails, and joints.

In nail psoriasis, the nails may become pitted, ridged, thickened, or discoloured. They may also separate from the nail bed, a condition known as Onycholysis. In severe cases, the nails may even crumble or break apart.

Nail psoriasis can be painful, and it may also affect a person's ability to perform daily activities, such as grasping or gripping objects. The condition can also be associated with other types of psoriasis, such as plaque psoriasis, which causes red, scaly patches on the skin. Treatment options for nail psoriasis include topical creams, phototherapy, and systemic medications. In some serious cases, surgery may be needed.

Paronychia:

Paronychia is a common infection of the skin around the fingernail or toenail. It typically occurs when the skin around the nail is damaged, allowing bacteria or fungi to enter and infect the area.

Symptoms of Paronychia may include redness, swelling, and tenderness around the nail, as well as pus-filled blisters or abscesses. In some cases, the nail may become discoloured or separated from the nail bed.

TYPES OF NAIL TREATMENT

There are several types of nail surgeries that may be performed depending on the condition being treated. Here are some common types of nail surgeries:

Partial nail avulsion:

This surgery involves the removal of part of the nail. It is commonly used to treat ingrown toenails, in which the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain and inflammation.

Total nail avulsion:

This surgery involves the complete removal of the nail. It may be performed to treat severe or recurring fungal nail infections, trauma to the nail, or other nail disorders.

Matrixectomy:

This surgery involves the removal of the nail matrix, which is the area at the base of the nail where the nail grows. It may be performed to treat recurrent ingrown toenails or other nail deformities.

Nail biopsy:

This surgery involves the removal of a small sample of the nail tissue for laboratory analysis. It may be performed to diagnose certain nail disorders, such as nail psoriasis or onychomycosis.

Nail bed repair:

This surgery involves repairing the nail bed, which is the tissue beneath the nail. It may be performed to treat nail bed injuries or deformities.

It is important to note that the type of nail surgery performed will depend on the specific condition being treated and the severity of the condition. It is recommended that individuals discuss their options with a healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate course of treatment.
